Peyronie’s Disease
Peyronie’s disease can progress and ultimately result in erectile dysfunction
Peyronie’s disease occurs when the sponge-like cavernous body of the penis (corpora cavernosa) toughens. As a result, fibrous tissue (“plaque”) disrupts the natural tissue, compromising structure and blood flow.
Peyronie’s Disease Causes
The cause of Peyronie’s disease is unclear. Many researchers believe the plaque of Peyronie’s disease can develop following trauma (hitting or bending) that causes localized bleeding inside the penis. It’s thought Peyronie’s disease generally results from the rupturing of small blood vessels inside the penis. For example, the penis may be damaged during sex, athletic activity or as the result of an accident.
Peyronie’s Disease Treatment
If applied three to six months after the onset of the disease, non-surgical treatments can be effectively used to stop, and even reduce, the plaque formation.
If left untreated, Peyronie’s disease can progress and ultimately result in erectile dysfunction. In case of non-responsiveness to the aforementioned treatment options, surgery may be a last resort course of action to remove the plaque and straighten the penis.
